Paddling for a Purpose

210 KM in 8 days to support two amazing kids

Hi, I'm Steve. I run my own maintenance company, “The Maintenance Guy.” I’m a proud father to my daughter Caoimhe, and partner to my girlfriend, Claire.

I thrive on new challenges and finding meaning in every adventure. Some of my past challenges have been:

  • The Tough Guy Challenge (one of the world’s toughest endurance races)
  • Cycling from London to Brighton in under 3 hours
  • Dancing for 5 days straight to break a world record for the NHS
  • Crossing Loch Lomond on a paddleboard for charity

This year I have decided to embark on a new challenge to support 2 wonderful kids that I have the privilege of knowing.

In September I'm taking to the sea to paddle around the wonderful island of Ibiza to raise money and awareness for two incredible causes:

Meet my inspiration
Theo

Theo

Theo is the young son of Julian, a close friend of mine. I’ve known Julian since the late 1990s, back when he was running a bar in Ibiza – a connection that has grown stronger over the years.

This past summer, I had the joy of visiting Julian and meeting Theo and his brother, Martin. Theo is a courageous and bright young boy living with Smith-Magenis Syndrome (SMS), a rare developmental disorder. SMS affects every part of his life – from sleep disturbances and behavioural challenges to language delays and unique facial features. He’s even faced life-threatening medical emergencies, including time in the ICU on a ventilator.

Despite the daily challenges, Theo's strength and his family's resilience are deeply inspiring. The SMS Foundation UK has been a vital support system for them.

Freya

Freya "The Brave"

Freya is a bright, funny, and fearless little girl with the cheekiest sense of humour and the biggest heart. She's always ready with a cuddle and lights up every room she enters. Her aunt used to work at Julien’s bar, so she’s part of the extended family.

Freya shares a beautiful bond with her identical twin sister, Alice. They’re absolutely inseparable – best friends who love being together every chance they get.

In December 2022, at just a few years old, Freya was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma – a rare and aggressive childhood cancer. After 15 long months of tough treatment, in March 2024, the family received heartbreaking news: Freya had relapsed.

Since then, she’s had to face even more chemotherapy and major surgeries. But true to her name, Freya continues to fight with unbelievable courage.

Support me

I need your help

As I mentioned above, the goal of this challenge is to raise both awareness and much-needed funds for two incredible charities – The SMS Foundation UK and Solving Kids’ Cancer UK. And this is where I could really use your help!

Please share this far and wide – tell your mates, post it online, shout about it at the pub – whatever you can do to help get the word out. The more people who hear about it, the better the chances of making a real difference for these charities.

And yes, I’m also asking for donations. This challenge is completely self-funded – I’m covering all the travel, gear, and accommodation myself – so every single penny you give goes straight to the charities.
